Pursuing a PhD in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at the University of Florida..
Country of Origin: Kenya
Current School:
University of Florida
Past School:
University of KwaZulu Natal
Why did you choose these graduate Programs:
The University of Florida had a graduate project in South Africa, giving me an opportunity to research the environmental sector within the African context. The graduate program also provided a wide range of coursework, excellent mentor-ships and a flexibility that allowed me to design my plan of study according to my interests. Florida also has great weather!
Career Goals:
I have a deep interest in utilizing engineering applications in solving environmental problems. My career objective is to work in a developing country researching, designing, and promoting technologies that will enhance human, institutional and infrastructural capacity. Furthermore, I want to design programs that aim to manage water resources and, overall, conserve the environment.
Favorite Past Time:
Soccer, Tennis, Guitar, Piano and Horse Riding.
Advice to African students for getting into top graduate programs in the US:
Write a personal statement that highlights your strengths, achievements and academic goals. Apply early to give yourself an opportunity to vet the programs, secure funding and familiarize yourself with your future department. As an African, make sure you find a place with tropical weather as the environment you work in is important; this was an important factor for me at least. Additionally, when applying to a graduate program, ensure your interests are aligned with the interests of both your department and supervisor. Graduate work is very demanding so you must make sure your department and your advisors are the right fit for you.
